Physical Education at Mount Gilbert

The PE curriculum at Mount Gilbert offers all students the opportunity to take part in a variety of sporting activities.  In Key Stages 3 & 4, students are assessed in the following areas: ability to perform key skills; knowledge of tactics and rules; physical and mental capacity; ability to evaluate and improve and understanding of healthy, active lifestyles.  It is important to us that all students not only take part in sport, but do so with values of working as part of a team and sportsmanship.  Activities that students will take part in this year include: basketball, football, badminton, handball, table-tennis, gymnastics, OAA, tennis, athletics and cricket.

Alongside this, in the 2015/16 school year, all students in Year 9 (and those students joining us after year 9) will be entered for the ‘Entry Level Certificate in Physical Education’.  A practical-based qualification, students are assessed in 3 different sporting areas as a performer, coach or official.

At Key Stage 4, all students who are educated at the main Mount Gilbert site will complete the Cambridge Nationals Award in Sport Studies. This a course consisting of several units with theory and practical elements along with a written exam. Students who choose Physical Education as an option at Key Stage 4 will complete the Cambridge Nationals Certificate in Sport Studies.

Kit Policy

It is important that all students feel comfortable in school and as such, hygiene is important to us in PE.  All students are expected to get changed into school PE kit before taking part. Students may buy their own PE kit from the school office or borrow kit from school.  Failure to change into appropriate kit will prevent students from taking part in practical lessons. In this instance, students will complete theory work on the current topic.

Extra-Curricular Sport

We believe that nothing quite beats some friendly competition and as such, extra-curricular sport plays a vital part of life at Mount Gilbert.  With a focus on inclusion and taking part, all students have the opportunity to represent Mount Gilbert against neighbouring schools in a variety of sports.  If there’s a sport you would like us to try and arrange a fixture for that we haven’t thought of – just ask!

In the last academic year, Mount Gilbert students were participated in fixtures in athletics, cricket, football and table-tennis.

Sports Day 2015

On a beautiful day for sport, Mount Gilbert students took part in their annual sports day. Once again, sports day was a great success this year with twenty students taking part in some exciting and well-contested events. Students were divided into three houses: Empire, Everest and Stonehenge and competed at various track and field events. The eventual winning house was Stonehenge, narrowly beating last years’ winners Everest into second place. All houses competed in a sporting spirit and contributed to the success of the day. Well done all.

Here are some facts and figures from the day:
